Polo came to Jaipur in the late 19th Century, Lt. General His Highness Saramad-i-Raja-i-Hindustan Raj Rajendra Maharajadhiraj Shri Sir Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur would lay the foundation of his love for polo on these grounds- famed to be smooth as a billiards table! The Maharaja’s passion for polo led him to construct a polo ground near Rambagh Palace. A nine-goal legend, the Maharaja’s tales of prowess as a rider and polo player still make the rounds of polo get togethers.
Brig. Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh Bahadur MVC would visit the polo grounds with his father as a child and this is perhaps where he developed a love for the sport. He became well known for having organized some of the most renowned polo events and tournaments across India.
Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh Ji beckoned the world to Jaipur, and this was one of his significant contribution to polo in India. Leading names of International fame, from all flocks, were part of this journey. Jacqueline Kennedy, the President and the Prime Ministers of India and U.S.S.R, and HRH Princess Diana witnessed matches in Jaipur. HRH The Prince of Wales are some of those who played polo in Jaipur.
Jaipur Polo Club was originally formed in 1918 comprising of players mainly from Jodhpur & Jaipur Riyasat.
